Taliban war lord welcomed by locals in Kandahar after arriving from Doha, Qatar
Locals in Kandahar welcomed the Taliban’s political chief and his delegation from Doha, Qatar as they arrived in the city on August 17.
Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and his entourage received a warm welcome, with people waving and cheering ‘Allahu Akbar.’ They had reportedly been in Doha negotiating a ceasefire.
Baradar celebrated the Taliban’s seizure of Kabul on August 15 and issued a statement saying the militant group has still has much work to do.
He said: ‘Now it is time to test and prove, now we have to show that we can serve our nation and ensure security and comfort of life.’
Baradar had previously been arrested in Karachi City in Pakistan in 2010, but was released in 2018 under the Doha agreement signed during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s term. The deal included the gradual pullout of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 14 months in exchange for a ceasefire.
