Rochester, NY - Rochester Police have released body-worn camera video showing two officers firing at a dog that attacked several people around Warwick Avenue on the city’s southwest side on Monday.

One person had a metal fragment, possibly a bullet fragment, removed from his leg about an hour after the dog attack. RPD Capt. Greg Bello says there’s an internal investigation to determine if the fragment came from an officer’s bullet. Bello described the fragment as about the size of a fingernail on a pinky.

Rochester Police say the dog got loose during a fight between two family members on Kirkland Road. They say the fight started when 34-year-old David Singletary started damaging a car in the driveway of a home. According to RPD, the home’s resident went outside with an unloaded shotgun after hearing the sounds, and Singletary pointed a knife at him.

In the first officer’s bodycam video, you can hear him shouting, “where’s the gun” and another person responding, “the gun is right there on the floor.” As the officer got closer to the fight, the dog charged the officer, and the officer fired two shots toward the ground. A slowed-down bodycam video of a third witness officer shows the bullets hitting the sidewalk.

After that, the dog ran back toward the fight, but then charged at another officer. The second officer’s bodycam video begins with him trying to stop the fight, shouting “show me your hands” and “get on the ground now.” After that, he fires one shot at the dog. Afterward, he keeps demanding that the people fighting get on the ground. Eventually, both people put their hands behind their backs.

RPD says the dog wasn’t hit either time.
