With Ebrahim Raisi’s inauguration coming up and the ratification ceremony on Tuesday ostensibly making him president, Iranians have time to reflect on the performance of the Rouhani administration and their hopes and demands for the Raisi administration. With Raisi seen as a hardline figure through the western lens and the recent Vienna talks halted pending the change in administration in Iran, it is to be seen how Ebrahim Raisi will deal with foreign affairs and what plans he has for domestic policy.

Interviews:

Ali, Iranian vendor
Question: ‘Do you think Mr. Raisi can resolve the differences between Iran and the west, namely the US?
“Honestly, no, because there isn’t a positive view of Mr. Raisi in international communities, unless there is a verification or if the government makes another decision based on a review on how to lift the sanctions.”
Question: ‘What, in your opinion, are the biggest problems facing Mr. Raisi’s administration?
“All of the problems in our country are related to sanctions. If the sanctions are lifted his [Mr. Raisi’s] job will be easier and, in my opinion, there will only remain corruption which has to be combatted.”

No name given, an Iranian citizen
Question: ‘How hopeful are you for Raisi’s presidency?
“None of them can be successful. Neither Mr. Raisi not Mr. Rouhani, because I do not think they are at a tier where they can administer a country.”
Question: ‘How hopeful are you for Raisi’s presidency?
“I’m very happy that a just and fit person has been able to step up to this position after 8 years and accept such a dangerous responsibility.”
Question: ‘Do you think Mr. Raisi’s administration is one of peace or conflict with the West?

“I think it’s 60-40. Meaning we will move 60% towards peace based on their [Mr. Raisi’s] administrative track record and 40% towards standing up against the unjustified demands that they [foreigners] have from us, which Mr. Raisi should stand up too as well.”

Meisam Ghasemzadeh, Iranian citizen
Question: ‘Do you think Mr. Raisi can resolve the differences between Iran and the west, namely the US?

“The conflict between Iran and the US does not pertain to a person for one person or administration to want to resolve it. It is much more deep-rooted. Maybe he can reduce it with negotiations but no, I it won’t be completely resolved. The problem of sanctions will still remain.”
Question: ‘Do you think Mr. Raisi’s administration is one of peace or conflict with the West?

“It’s something in between, meaning there will neither be a war nor total peace. What has been happening within the past 10-12 years will continue. I think so. I mean conditions regarding foreign relations will not improve.”
