Police cracked down hard on demonstrators protesting against the collapse in the Turkish lira, on Wednesday 24 November.

The lira nosedived over 15% on Tuesday as President Tayyip Erdogan talked about an "economic war of independence" and vowed to stick to his country's lose monetary policy, including low interest rates even as inflation soars.

The drop prompted protests in cities across Turkey. In Istanbul the police cracked down hard, allegedly beating and detaining many protesters. Some were subjected to further violence in police busses, according to witnesses.

The lira has lost around 42% of its value this year, including a 22% decline since the start of last week.
