Blood Falls
Blood Falls is a unique and mysterious natural phenomenon located in Antarctica, near the coast of the continent on the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Its name comes from its striking red color, which results from iron-rich, saltwater that flows out of the glacier, giving the appearance of a bleeding waterfall. The water's red hue is caused by the oxidation of iron, and it contains microbes that survive in the extreme cold and saline conditions, even at temperatures as low as -50°C. Since its discovery, Blood Falls has attracted scientific interest because of its microbial life, which offers insights into how life can exist in extreme environments—potentially even on other planets or moons with similar conditions.
