Dashcam video shows driver fleeing Groton police before fatal crash

Groton, CT - A man was killed after striking a steel traffic pole in Groton Tuesday morning.
An officer on patrol said they saw a 1996 Geo Prizm driving on Route 12 at a high rate of speed shortly after 2:30 a.m.
The officer said the driver sped through a red light at the intersection with Kings Highway.
According to the officer, the vehicle makes an illegal U-turn through another red light at Route 12 and Pleasant Valley Road South and continued southbound on Route 12.
Police said the officer then activated his emergency lights to pull over the vehicle.
The vehicle continued driving at a high rate of speed south on Route 12.
Officers said the vehicle then attempted to turn, but struck a steel traffic pole on the corner of Kings Highway.
The officer called for emergency medical services to respond to the scene.
The driver was transported to L&M Hospital for life-threatening injuries.
Police said he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officers said a loaded handgun was found inside the vehicle.
