Dashcam footage shows Monrovia police help mother with roadside birth
-----
Monrovia, CA - Dashcam footage released on Tuesday captured the moment Monrovia police responded to a help call for a mother who had just given birth inside her car on the side of the road.
“We need help,” a woman is heard saying to Monrovia Police Department dispatch on the night of July 8. “My daughter is having a baby, and the baby just came out.”
The video shows officers driving to the area of Wild Rose and Mountain Avenues in the San Gabriel Valley with their sirens on, as dispatch continues speaking with the new grandmother.
“The baby’s out?” the dispatcher asks.
“Yes, the baby’s out, my son-in-law has the baby in his hands right now,” the grandmother replies.
“Okay, don’t cut the umbilical cord,” instructs the dispatcher.
“We won’t, we won’t,” assures the grandmother.
Details are limited as to how the chain of events transpired, but, according to MPD, the baby “just couldn’t wait to make her debut into the world, so Mom pulled over, Dad jumped into action, and our officers arrived just in time to help welcome her roadside.”
Officers arrive just before 10 p.m. to greet the family and assist with providing post-roadside birth medical care to the mother and newborn. The video shows police interacting with the family in high spirits, offering their congratulations as the father stands by the open passenger door of the silver Prius, helping his wife and new daughter.
“It’s a beautiful little baby girl,” one officer says into his radio. “Baby Sophia.”
Another officer is heard replying through the radio, “Happy Birthday, Sophia.”
