Cleveland, OH - The Ohio State Highway Patrol is sharing a stark reminder of just how fast conditions can change and how dangerous winter weather can turn the roads.
OSHP posted body camera footage from November on Sunday. The video shows a trooper responding to a car that slid off of I-71 in Mansfield, when a semi loses control on a bridge and sails into the guardrail.
Soon after, the video shows a pickup truck slide off in the same spot.
This comes as the Ohio Department of Transportation is warning drivers could face dicey conditions on Monday, with a combination of winds and fast-falling snow.
“Your visibility is going to be reduced while you're behind the wheel,” said Ray Marsch, a spokesman for ODOT. “Mile by mile, minute by minute, road conditions can change.”
Marsch said Sunday’s rain prevented crews from pre-treating roadways because any salt would have been washed away.
Instead, ODOT plans to have about 300 trucks out across northeast Ohio starting at midnight. Crews will work 12-hour shifts until the storm passes.
“When snow is coming down at more than an inch an hour, which is currently being forecasted, our goal is to make these roads passable, not perfect,” said Marsch.
Marsch is urging drivers to slow down, take extra cautions on bridges and overpasses, which freeze first, and give themselves plenty of time to get where they’re going.
“Don't be in a rush while you're traveling tomorrow morning on your commute,” said Marsch.
