Dallas police released bodycam video showing suspect punching officer before shooting

Dallas, TX - Body and dash camera footage released Tuesday by the Dallas Police Department shows a suspect punch an officer in the face, breaking his nose and several other bones, before the officer shot him early Sunday morning following a traffic stop near Highland Park Village.
The incident involving seven-year veteran Officer Ashton Rosebud unfolded around 2:13 a.m. Sunday in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane, after the officer pulled over a Jeep for driving without its tail lights on, police said.
The passenger, identified by police as 27-year-old Jeremy Mays, got out of the Jeep and attacked the officer, punching him in the face before the officer fired twice, striking Mays once, according to Dallas Police Department officials.
"Our officer was violently attacked," said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. "This is unacceptable and really unbelievable how this incident occurred."
Comeaux said Mays was wearing a ring when he punched Rosebud, which officials believe contributed to the severity of the injuries. Surgery remains possible for Rosebud, according to the chief. Body camera footage released by police shows the officer stumbling after the assault.
"I feel like he was trying to remain conscious," Comeaux said. "You could see by the way he was walking he still wasn't fully back."
According to Dallas Police Deputy Chief William Griffith, commander of the Criminal Investigation Unit, the incident began before the traffic stop when officers encountered Mays walking along the Central Expressway approximately 10 minutes earlier.
Officers told Mays he could not walk on the highway or its shoulder, and he was allowed to get into a Jeep driven by his girlfriend. That vehicle was then pulled over minutes later for not having its lights on by a different officer, officials said. Griffith said police believe Mays was intoxicated at the time of the attack. No gun was found on scene.
