Police arrest man after smashing windows with an axe

New Haven, CT - Police released bodycam footage of a man smashing windows with an axe earlier this week in New Haven.
According to police, roughly five businesses on State Street and Grand Avenue were damaged by 45-year-old Tywan Groomes.
Footage shows officers locating Groomes near State Street and Eld Street, still armed with the axe. At first, he refused to drop the weapon and tried to evade officers, but was taken into custody after a brief struggle, according to police.
Groomes was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, sixth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal trespass.
Police said he allegedly smashed a window with a rock and stole an axe from inside a store, before walking down State Street and smashing windows with it.
“You have an individual with an axe attacking windows, so that’s potentially a very volatile situation, but thankfully he was taken into custody without incident,” New Haven officer Christian Bruckhart said.
Groomes is being held on a $50,000 bond and was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
