The *accabadora* (or *agabbadora*—literally "she who ends," derived from the Sardinian *s'acabbu*, meaning "the end," or the Spanish *acabar*, meaning "to finish") is a figure—historically unverified—of a woman who would bring about the death of people of any age, provided their state of illness prompted their family members or the victims themselves to request it. In reality, there is no evidence of such a practice, which was said to have existed across all regions of Sardinia. According to the accounts, the service was not to be paid for by the sick person's relatives, as paying to cause death ran counter to religious tenets.
Legend has it that the killing methods employed by the *femina agabbadora* varied by location: entering the dying person's room dressed in black with her face covered, and killing them either by suffocation with a pillow, by striking the forehead with an olive-wood club (*su matzolu*) or the back of the neck with a sharp blow, or by strangulation while pinning the neck between her legs. The most well-known instrument is said to be a type of wooden mallet.
Another ritual performed was the removal of all sacred images and cherished personal objects from the dying person's room; it was believed that this would make the separation of the spirit from the body easier and less painful.
