Cocoa police officers responded to a vehicle crash on Saturday morning that included one of the vehicles being partially submerged in the Indian River.

According to officials, the crash took place just off State Road 528 in Cocoa,

Cocoa police officials said Officer Brian Baylis was one of the first to arrive on the scene, who responded to the vehicle partially submerged in the river.

“It appeared the occupants were out of the water, and Officer Baylis did not hesitate to get into the water and swim to the victims to make sure they were safe,” said a Cocoa police spokesperson.

Baylis was followed by Cocoa Firefighter EMT Jason Moylan and Cocoa Fire Lt. Alex Candelario.

All three responded to treat the driver, who was later airlifted to the hospital in stable condition, with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Brevard County Fire Rescue also assisting.

Officials said the passenger was not injured, and it appears the driver may have had a medical episode, causing the incident.
