Portland, OR - Two police officers were injured early Tuesday morning in a scuffle with a suspect while on a call about a reported trespassing at a property in Northeast Portland.

The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) released somebody camera footage from the incident.

It began when officers responded to a trespassing call on private property in the 4100 block of NE Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just before 2 a.m.

According to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), the officers asked the man to leave, but he refused. When officers attempted to arrest him, the suspect resisted and allegedly attacked. The two officers were eventually able to restrain and arrest him.

The officers were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said. Authorities said they would not be releasing the conditions of the injured officers out of respect for their privacy. Both officers have since been released from the hospital.

"I'm relieved both officers are expected to recover from their injuries," PPB Chief Bob Day said in a press release. "Every time our officers respond to a call or attempt to take someone into custody, they face the very real possibility of violence. Incidents like this are a stark reminder of the risks they accept every day to protect our community, and I'm grateful for their commitment to public safety."

The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Yimer Funez-Cruz of Portland. After being medically evaluated, he was booked into jail on two complaints of assaulting a public safety officer, two complaints of fourth-degree assault, second-degree assault, attempted first-degree theft, attempted felon in possession of a restricted weapon, and second-degree criminal trespass.

This case remains under investigation.

Funez-Cruz is due in court on July 8 for violating his probation on another case, in which he was convicted of second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon for a stabbing in 2024.
