Fredericksburg, VA - A pair of Virginia police officers are being hailed as heroes for rescuing two people from a burning home on Tuesday. The Fredericksburg Police Department released intense body-worn camera video of the rescue efforts on Wednesday, recognizing the two officers for their courage and quick actions.
911 dispatchers first received a call of a house fire in the 200 block of Hillcrest Drive around 4 p.m. When officials got to the home, they were told a woman was still trapped inside. In the video, the man directs officers into the house, pleading them to "get my wife."
The officer, identified via his body camera as Officer Dylan Smith, goes into the home and quickly finds the woman through the smoky conditions.
"Give me your hand, I'm going to pull you," Smith says in the video. "Lawrence, help me," Smith is heard calling to a colleague. The two officers grab the woman by her arms and get her safely out of the home. The video clip ends with Officer Smith shouting, "I'm coming out!"
According to a post from the department, the man and woman were treated at the scene and taken to the hospital. The two officers were treated on site for smoke inhalation. No serious injuries were reported.
"The Fredericksburg Police Department recognizes the courage and quick actions of Officers Smith and Lawrence, whose efforts helped bring a resident to safety under extremely dangerous circumstances," the police department said in a statement.
Fire crews worked quickly to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
