Springfield, IL - A Sangamon County sheriff’s lieutenant was captured on his dashboard camera hitting a man while he crossed the street.
Sangamon County officials released the footage Friday afternoon. According to the news release, Lt. Andrew Henton was off-duty when he drove his county-issued squad car through Downtown Springfield on Sept. 24.
The video showed Henton as he turned from 9th Street onto Monroe near the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. Henton hit the pedestrian as he walked across Monroe Street, according to the county news release.
County officials said Henton stopped the vehicle, and got out to check on the man before calling emergency services. Springfield police responded to the scene, and the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police described his injuries as non-life-threatening, the release said. The extent of his injuries and his current condition are unknown.
Following an investigation, Henton was issued a citation for failing to stop for someone in a crosswalk. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 15.
The sheriff’s office said it reviewed the dashcam video and found Henton was not using his phone or computer, and said there were no other distractions inside the car.
