Phoenix, AZ - A Phoenix police officer and an Arizona Humane Society emergency responder helped pull a dog from a canal after a rescue that came down to one last chance.

The rescue began after Phoenix police received a call about a dog trapped in a South Mountain canal. An officer responded and requested help from the Arizona Humane Society's Emergency Animal Medical Technicians.

When EAMT Andy arrived, the officer held onto his belt as Andy leaned over the canal wall and tried to grab the dog as it floated past.

The first attempt failed. The dog slipped through his fingertips and continued drifting down the canal before disappearing beneath the surface.

The Phoenix Police Department shared video of the rescue with the caption, "Police work can change in an instant. One moment routine, the next a call for a dog trapped in a South Mountain canal."

"Our officers moved quickly and safely pulled the pup to safety. It's this kind of dedication to protecting and serving our community that Phoenix officers bring every day," the department added.

Andy used a catch pole to make another attempt. This time, he was able to secure the dog while the Phoenix police officer helped pull it from the canal.

The video shows the dog being brought safely out of the water after the close call.

It was the kind of rescue that started as a call about an animal in trouble and quickly turned into a race against time.
