A fight breaks out in downtown Albuquerque, but the cavalry comes to the rescue. That happened over the weekend when the Albuquerque Police Department’s horse-mounted unit, took a pair of troublemakers, into custody.

It almost looked like a scene out of the Old West. “Hey, hold my horse. Hold my horse,” an officer on scene yelled.

APD released a video, complete with the soundtrack, from officers’ body cameras and downtown surveillance. It started in Downtown Albuquerque near Central and 5th over the weekend. A fight broke out, and officers were seen on horseback surrounding the group.

One of the men, later identified as Socorro Cardenas, went up to one of the officers and appeared to grab his leg. Officers tried to arrest him, but police said Cardenas resisted them by tensing his arms and not letting officers put his hands behind his back. That’s when officers turned their attention to another member of the group, Hector Diaz-Hernandez, who could be seen yelling at officers.

He took off on foot, with the officers on horseback in pursuit. He weaved in and out of parked cars along Central. But his tactics are no match for the mounted unit, and Diaz-Hernandez is soon in cuffs.

Cardenas returned and was also arrested, but not before police said he tried to interfere with his companion’s arrest and hit an officer while flailing his arms. Both suspects were arrested and charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and battery on a peace officer.
