Officers lead residents to safety as massive fire destroys South Bend construction site

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Police Department released bodycam footage showing officers rushing inside a downtown apartment complex to help lead residents to safety as a fire engulfed a neighboring construction site.
The fire broke out just after midnight at the Stadium Flats construction site near Four Winds Field. Fire officials said firefighters arrived to heavy flames.
Residents at the neighboring Diamond View Apartments were evacuated while crews battled the flames. Bodycam video from the South Bend Police Department shows officers running inside to warn Diamond View residents and help several who needed assistance out of the building.
Fire officials said no injuries were reported in the blaze.
“Thank you to the South Bend Fire Department for your support on what could have been a much more catastrophic situation,” the South Bend Police Department said in the social media post.
Fire officials said they considered the construction site a “total loss” and focused efforts on preventing the fire from spreading to the neighboring Diamond View Apartments and the South Bend Cubs Performance Center across the street.
There was no damage to Four Winds Field. The performance center sustained some damage to its exterior from smoke and heat.
