Bodycam footage shows when a Burrillville man pointed a loaded gun in an officer’s face

Burrillville, RI - Nicholas Smith, 40, was taken into custody Thursday morning and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, firing in a compact area, simple assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
Police said three officers went to a Tarkiln Road home around 8:30 a.m. to investigate a report of shots fired on the property.
The bodycam video shows an officer knocking on a door, stepping back and waiting for someone to answer. Smith is then seen opening the door and immediately pointing a handgun within inches of the officer’s face.
The officer was able to push Smith’s arm away from her face and wrestle the weapon out of his hand. She then took him to the ground with the assistance of the other two officers.
“Are you good?” one of the officers asked her.
“Yeah, I’m good,” she replied while trying to handcuff Smith.
Smith, who appeared to be in his underwear, could be seen in the footage moving his arms and hands around as the officer attempted to handcuff him.
“I didn’t do anything,” Smith mumbled.
“You’re [expletive] drunk, buddy, and with a gun?” the officer shouted back. “You pointed it right in my face.”
Officers later searched Smith’s home and uncovered three handguns, three long guns — including an AR-15 — and 27 high-capacity magazines. Smith was later charged with possession of a high-capacity feeding device as a result.
Smith was released on $10,000 surety bail pending his formal arraignment, which is slated for Tuesday morning.
