Mount Pleasant, SC - A man was arrested early Tuesday morning after police saved a woman who was screaming for help following an assault with a baseball bat, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.
Officers responded to an apartment on Anna Knapp Boulevard at approximately 2:40 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from the victim reporting a domestic incident. Testimony from the victim states that her husband Geoffrey Gugel, was grossly intoxicated when he went outside to smoke on the apartment's porch. He later began banging on the porch door using objects from around the porch in order to get the victim's attention, the report states.
When the victim went out on the porch to see what was wrong, Gugel reportedly pushed her outside and locked the door. At that point the victim contacted 911.
While speaking with dispatch the victim stated that Gugel unlocked the door but became agitated when noticing that she was on the phone with 911. Gugel ordered her to hang up the phone and when she did not comply he armed himself with a baseball bat and began hitting the victim in the side of the head with the bat and attempting to smash her phone. The victim reports that Gugel also attempted to strangle her and punched her several times.
The victim told officers that during the assault she was unsure whether she lost consciousness or not but did not believe that she was going to survive "this" and feared for her life.
Officers arrived on scene at approximately 2:40 a.m. and kicked down the front door after hearing the victim screaming for help inside. Once inside the residence they found Gugel, on top of the victim, actively assaulting her. Gugel was pulled off the victim and arrested. A metal baseball bat was also located in the room.
Officer's documented the victim's injuries, which were reportedly consistent with the nature of the assault she described.
Gugel was transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center on charges of Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature.
