Rochester, NY - The Rochester Police Department has shared body camera footage that shows an officer shooting a suspect on the city's north side earlier this month.
Officers were on Weyl Street for a stolen vehicle investigation the night of Aug. 14 when two men appeared from backyards, with one of them shooting the other while chasing him across the street, according to police. Officers chased them into a backyard, where one saw Lavar McKnight, 48, on top of the other man pistol-whipping him.
The officer gave multiple commands for McKnight to stop and show his hands, according to police, but McKnight ignored the commands and the officer shot him in the torso. McKnight stopped attacking the other man, who had been shot in the jaw, and was taken into custody. Both men were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said a loaded handgun was found next to McKnight at the scene, and suspected drugs were found in the road. McKnight is facing several weapons charges, and a grand jury may consider additional charges.
