Pierce County deputy breaks driver's window to arrest him after he drove through school's crosswalk

Pierce County, WA - A 34-year-old man was arrested this week after deputies say he drove through a crosswalk at Glacier Middle School while a crossing guard and student were in the roadway.
The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Feb. 10 during dismissal, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
School surveillance video shows the driver disregarding a crossing guard’s commands to wait as students crossed the street, the sheriff’s office said. He then proceeded through the crosswalk while the guard was standing there, and a student was attempting to cross.
Deputies reviewed the surveillance video the following day and developed probable cause to arrest the driver for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies later located the vehicle parked in the school’s bus loop and attempted to contact the driver. After several minutes, the man refused to get out of the vehicle, authorities said. A deputy broke a window and removed him.
The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of reckless driving, two counts of driving with a suspended license, and resisting arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
During School Resource Officer Appreciation Week, the sheriff’s office thanked school resource officers for helping keep students and staff safe, particularly in school crosswalks.
“We understand it can be frustrating to wait for students to cross,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “But we also want to ensure our kids and the staff who care for them get home safely.”
