At least a dozen shots rang out in a parking lot early Sunday as Dallas police officers traded gunfire with a robbery suspect in Red Bird, according to body-camera footage released Tuesday.

Dallas police released more information into the police shooting in the 2900 block of West Wheatland Road. The shooting was the first time this year, officers have fired their weapons at people, the department said. Reginald Curry, 23, was arrested in the shooting and is facing three counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, police said.

Officers responded a little after 12:30 a.m. for a robbery in progress in an illegal game room in the area, police said. When they arrived, they approached the back of the shopping center and saw an open back door, with a man exiting.

The man told the officer they were being robbed and that the suspects were still inside, according to body-cam footage. Footage from inside the business shows Curry pointing a pistol at people.

Two officers then headed toward the front of the business, where they see Curry running from the area. An officer yelled at him to get on the ground before the sound of gunshots ring out in the footage. One officer used a pillar for cover, while another ducked behind a police vehicle.

“He’s running towards Taco Bell,” one officer says in the footage, referring to Curry. “He is armed, and he is shooting.”

Police said a second suspect exited the building behind Curry but ran from the scene. In a photo shared by police, Curry turned toward officers, pointed a gun and fired shots across his shoulder while running through a parking lot in the area.

Police said officers gave loud commands for Curry to drop his weapon, and he refused.

Officers in the video pleaded for more units while moving in his direction. Curry was later seen in the footage face down on the ground near a drive-thru of a fast-food business in the 2800 block of West Wheatland.

The footage showed at least three officers returning fire at Curry, striking him in the leg and chest area. They approached Curry near the business and yelled at him to show his hands and to not move.

“Keep your hands where I can see them,” one officer said in the footage. “We will shoot again.”

While officers placed handcuffs on Curry, he told them he got shot “in his leg and his side.” An officer later administers a tourniquet on his leg.

Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel arrived a little after 1 a.m., and Curry was taken to a local hospital where police said he was last listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police recovered three firearms, including one from Curry when officers arrested him. The Dallas police special investigations unit is investigating the shooting, and the Dallas County district attorney’s office is conducting their own investigation, police said.

Police officials did not say how many gunshots Curry fired at officers and how many times officers returned fire.
