Denver, CO - A deputy took a different approach to stopping an intruder after a bear broke into a vehicle and couldn’t get out.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy “responded to a different kind of car break-in” on Saturday morning when a bear hopped into a car parked outside of a house in the foothills and wasn’t able to get out.

Body camera footage showed the deputy using a rope to open the car door from afar and guiding the bear out of the car. While the deputy was able to respond quickly and acted fast, it didn’t stop the bear from wreaking havoc.

“Your car is destroyed,” the deputy said after looking into it.

This isn’t an unusual sight in Colorado. It’s bear season in the state, and bears are known to be out and about. While this means bear proofing campsites, they’re known to head beyond the woods.

“This is a good reminder to keep your vehicles locked, even when at home. Also, bears can smell any snacks you may leave in your car, so don’t tempt them to turn your car into a bear buffet,” the sheriff’s office said.

People should bear proof their cars and homes by locking up and rolling up windows in their cars and shutting windows on the first floor of their homes. People should also not leave food in their vehicles and make sure garbage cans are in a secure location.
