Mesa officials say a 36-year-old man is in serious condition but is expected to survive after a shooting involving officers near Dobson and Baseline roads Sunday evening.

Police say the man was a fugitive wanted from out of state who officials had been tracking.

SWAT personnel attempted to take the man into custody but he refused officer commands, according to Mesa police.

The man then tried to break away by slamming the car he was driving into a pizza business that had people and employees inside.

That was when the police shooting happened. The man was shot and taken to the hospital.

Albuquerque Police Department identified the suspect as Kevin McKinney, who was wanted after a deadly shooting in New Mexico on Saturday.

The 36-year-old reportedly shot and killed a man during a dispute related to an attempted firearm purchase. The gun used to kill the victim was reportedly stolen during a burglary in a “multi-state crime spree,” officials said.

Police say the shooting in Mesa occurred as U.S. Marshals and the Arizona Department of Public Safety were preparing to detain McKinney.

Those working at the store at the time said approximately "15 to 30 seconds" of gunfire ensued.

No officers were injured in this incident.
