Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a samaritan captures an escaped tortoise
-----
Jefferson County, CO - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shared video to of an apprehension of a rather slow suspect: Lard, a tortoise weighing just shy of 100 pounds. Animal control officers received a report of a tortoise wandering in a neighborhood in Littleton on Aug. 31, and when officers arrived on scene, they found Lard walking in a cul-de-sac with his owner attempting to coax him home.
Police said the tortoise managed to escape from a fenced yard and was slowly making his way through the neighborhood. The responding officer and a neighbor lifted the tortoise and carried him home, remarking on the animal’s weight as they did so.
“What are you eating?” one of them said, to which the other replied: “Everything. He’s been eating since we got here.” They then mused if Lard ate the fence in order to make his escape.
There was no mention of what criminal charges Lard may be facing in relation to his escape.
