Shoplifter who broke into a home, arms himself with a knife is fatally shot by Chandler police

A suspect is dead following a shooting Wednesday involving Chandler police officers, officials said.

Richard Ring, 39, has been identified as the suspect who was shot during a standoff with police in a residential area near Warner and Alma School roads.

The incident began shortly before noon after Ring allegedly stole some merchandise from a hardware store and fought one of the store's employees, police said.

Ring then allegedly broke into a nearby residence and retrieved a knife. After exiting the home, Ring reportedly ignored commands to drop the knife and was shot by an officer.

The suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured.
