Wichita, KS - Police bodycam video shows a 45-year-old man wanted for child sex crimes pull a gun on a Wichita police officer before he was fatally shot earlier this week.
The incident happened at around noon on Wednesday in a neighborhood northwest of Pawnee and Webb Road. Capt. Aaron Moses said that around 9 a.m., SWAT and U.S. Marshals developed information that 45-year-old Benjamin David Board, who had a warrant for eight counts of sexual exploitation of a child, was at an apartment in the 9200 block of East Harry.
"Officers also received information that the suspect was armed with at least one firearm and stated that he was going to get into a shootout with police when he was located," Capt. Moses told reporters during a briefing following the shooting.
Authorities said Board left the apartment at around noon, and officers attempted to stop him in the 8900 block of Cherry Creek. Capt. Moses said officers identified themselves and told the suspect that he was under arrest.
Bodycam video shows Board riding an electric scooter, and an officer ordered him to stop. Board ran and then tripped.
"If you pay close attention in the video and the still shot, you can see the officer's left hand reach out, and the suspect's firearm in his right hand," said Capt. Matthew Lynch with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, "and the suspect's finger is clearly in the trigger guard on the trigger."
Capt. Lynch said during a news conference on Friday that the Wichita police officer fired his weapon eight times, killing Board. He did not fire his gun.
