Kalamazoo officers caught an unusual suspect Tuesday: an alligator crossing the road.

A police sergeant stumbled upon the small alligator crawling across Lake Street near Division Street Tuesday.

An officer's body camera captured the moments the team safely captured the alligator.

The video shows officers laughing and taking photos of the alligator, before one officer puts on blue latex gloves and goes in for the grab.

"I got it. It's fine. The poor little guy is cold," the officer said.

Officers said they contacted a local alligator sanctuary in Athens before turning it over to animal control.

It is unclear how the alligator got there, or who it belongs to.

According to chapter 7 of the Kalamazoo city ordinance, it is illegal to have an alligator, or any exotic animal, as a pet without a license.
