A dik-dik is a small antelope in the genus Madoqua, native to the bushlands of eastern and southern Africa. There are four species: Kirk’s, Günther’s, Salt’s, and Silver dik-diks. They stand about 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) at the shoulder, weigh 3–6 kg (6.6–13.2 lb), and can live up to 10 years in the wild, or longer in captivity (up to 18.4 years for females). Their name comes from the "dik-dik" or "zik-zik" alarm call females make through their long, tubular snouts when threatened, which both sexes use to alert others of predators.
