Translation technology helps Hillsborough deputy communicate with Spanish-speaking driver
-----
Tampa, FL - The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is touting the success of real-time translation technology, which is now being used to bridge language barriers and enhance communication between deputies and non-English speaking members of the community.
In a recent success story, the sheriff’s office referred to a traffic crash involving a Spanish-speaking driver who spoke limited English.
Utilising Axon’s real-time translation feature through a body-worn camera, the deputy said he was able to clearly explain the crash process, insurance requirements, and what steps to take.
Video of the interaction shows the technology at work in real-time as the deputy explains the process in English before the translator relays what he is saying back to the driver in Spanish.
The driver of the vehicle then relayed their own question back to the deputy in Spanish before the translator repeats it in English.
This is just one example of the ways the technology has helped to prevent misunderstandings and bridge communication gaps.
“This technology helps us better serve every member of our community,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Clear communication is essential in law enforcement, and this tool allows our deputies to respond more effectively, safely, and with greater understanding, no matter what language is being spoken.”
The translation feature supports 50 languages and provides immediate assistance for deputies in the field.
