Footage show sleeping driver crashing into an Irwindale Police Department Patrol Vehicle

Baldwin Park, CA - On July 23, 2026, at approximately 4:04 a.m., an Irwindale Police Department officer observed a motorist traveling at more than 100 miles per hour on the southbound 605 Freeway.
Its Irwindale Police Department officer then conducted a traffic stop near the southbound 605 Freeway near the westbound 10 Freeway interchange.
Its driver yielded on the right-hand shoulder of the freeway, according to the Irwindale Police Department.
Both the subject’s vehicle and the patrol vehicle were positioned outside the freeway’s travel lanes.
Its Irwindale Police Department officer contacted the driver, before returning to his patrol vehicle to write a citation.
Moments later, as the officer was outside his patrol vehicle writing the citation, a pickup truck traveling along the freeway suddenly slammed into the back of the patrol vehicle.
The force of the impact pushed the police vehicle forward, causing it to crash into the vehicle that had been stopped for the traffic violation.
Subsequently, the pickup truck then overturned onto its side following the collision on the southbound 605 Freeway.
One Irwindale Police Department officer suffered minor cuts to his face from flying glass during the collision.
According to the police department, the officer returned to patrol duty the following evening.
Its driver who had been pulled over reported experiencing pain to his head and neck following the collision, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck that caused the collision was not injured, according to the department.
According to the Irwindale Police Department, the driver did not display any signs of being under the influence.
He told officers that he had fallen asleep while driving.
