A man is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Mesa on Friday afternoon.

Mesa police officers were called to the area of Stapley Drive and Main Street for a possible disturbance around 2:30 p.m. Officers arrived and spoke with family members, who said there was an argument inside the house between a man — identified as 27-year-old David Dimas — and two women, and that he had locked himself inside a shed. According to police, a woman said that Dimas was lighting things inside the shed on fire. The woman reportedly tried to put the fire out by making a hole in the shed and putting a water hose inside. She then noticed that Dimas may also be harming himself, according to police.

Police first got everyone out of the trailer, including several children who were not involved in the incident. Officers then went to the shed to try and get Dimas out. Mesa police say Dimas came out of the shed but refused to obey the officer’s commands and started making aggressive movements toward them, simulating he had some type of weapon.

During this time, two officers deployed a Taser and bean bag rounds at Dimas, but they were ineffective. Dimas kept going toward the officers, and one officer shot him. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries but is expected to survive.

No officers were hurt in the shooting. Police say Dimas had a cordless drill in one hand and a knife in the other, which were both hidden by shirts wrapped around his hands. An investigation is underway.
