Mantua, UT - New video of the two people who were rescued after falling through the ice at the Mantua Reservoir on Sunday has been released.
ABC4 has acquired multiple videos from the rescue of two people who fell through the ice at the Mantua Reservoir. Both body camera footage from the officer on scene and dashcam footage from the vehicle have been released by the Mantua Police Department.
At approximately 1:25 p.m., officers with the Mantua Police Department responded to a report of two people falling through the ice. When they arrived on scene, officers deployed flotation devices and were able to rescue both individuals with the help of bystanders.
The two individuals were reportedly ice fishing with friends when the ice beneath them began to crack. They both then fell simultaneously through the ice, according to a witness on the scene.
According to Caleb Hathcock, Public Information Officer for Mantua PD, the ice is only safe to walk on if it is about four inches thick.
“As of right now, it is not safe enough to walk on, and with the warmer weather, it makes it questionable,” Hathcock said.
Rescue crews deployed orange flotation discs to pull the individuals out of the water.
Both individuals were then medically evaluated and left the scene on their own. Officers placed police line tape around the area to prevent others from going onto the ice, and all emergency personnel then cleared the scene without further incident.
In a press release, police thanked those who helped them with the rescue.
“We’d like to thank the citizens who assisted us with the ice rescue. They were the true heroes!
We are strongly urging people to stay off the ice as the weather warms up. We understand the desire to ice fish is there, but it’s not worth the potential of getting injured or possibly worse.”
Hathcock added that he believes that being around other people is what saved the two individuals, and he encourages people to go ice fishing in groups whenever possible.
