Florence, KY - A Sheffield man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he bit a police K-9 during an incident at the scene of a search warrant in Florence.
According to the Florence Police Department, the Lauderdale County Drug Task Force was executing a search warrant on April 22, 2026, in the 200 block of North Locust Street, with assistance from the Florence-Lauderdale SWAT team and the department’s K-9 unit.
Police said David Culliver, 46, was not connected to the investigation but arrived at the scene and began interacting with officers. Authorities allege Culliver became disruptive, yelled at officers, and repeatedly stepped into an active roadway despite being instructed to move for safety reasons.
Officers attempted to arrest Culliver after he continued entering the roadway and disrupting traffic, according to the department. During efforts to take him into custody, police said Culliver resisted and a K-9 was deployed. Authorities allege that during the encounter, Culliver grabbed the dog and bit it before officers were able to gain control and place him in handcuffs.
Culliver was transported to North Alabama Medical Center for treatment of injuries described as puncture wounds from the K-9 before being booked into the Lauderdale County Detention Center.
He is charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and interfering with a police dog. Authorities said he remains in custody on a $2,500 bond.
The department released body camera footage it said was to provide additional context and that the incident has been reviewed, with the use of force determined to be justified.
