Port Orange, FL - Officers of the Port Orange Police Department rescued a man from his submerged vehicle after he crashed into a retention pond on Monday.

"Officers Peterson, Velez and Herstein demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to the community," the police department said in a Facebook post.

The three officers, in addition to two good Samaritans who witnessed the accident, jumped into the pond and worked together to save the driver.

After the driver was rescued, officers later learned that the driver may have fallen asleep behind the wheel before veering off the road into the pond.

The driver later told police he believed the locks on his vehicle were inoperable, and he was unable to open the door.
