St. Johns County deputies rescue a frightened elderly man after he drives into retention pond

St. Augustine, FL - St. Johns County deputies performed a dramatic rescue last month after an elderly man accidentally drove his car into a retention pond outside a St. Augustine library.
Footage released Monday shows a red sedan half submerged, with water rising all the way to its steering wheel.
Bystanders can be seen standing along the bank, watching anxiously as deputies Jeremiah Foster and Eddy Monduy rushed into the pond and toward the vehicle.
They initially attempted to open the driver’s side door, but were unsuccessful.
Moments later, a deputy broke the side window, reached inside, and unlocked the door.
“Come toward me,” one deputy called to the victim, who remained in stunned silence throughout the ordeal.
With St. Johns County Fire Rescue crews now on the scene, deputies pulled the man out of the water and placed him on a bench next to the pond.
SJCFR personnel treated the man for minor cuts and bruises before transporting him for precautionary evaluation.
