Franklin County Sheriff's Office captain fired after video shows him kicking detainee
By: The Franklin County Sheriff's Office captain accused of kicking a detainee multiple times has been fired from his role in the department.
Franklin County Sheriff Roger Langevin released a statement on Thursday, saying Captain John Grismore is no longer an employee of the department.
A video of the incident provided by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office shows the suspect handcuffed and shackled to a bench before falling down and hitting his face.
After two deputies help the man into a sitting position, the suspect attempts to stand again when Grismore enters the frame and kicks the man in the crotch and abdomen area several times.
Grismore had been placed on administrative leave following the incident earlier this month. Patrol deputies who witnessed Grismore kick the detainee reported his actions to Langevin.
"I am proud our deputies' actions and integrity in coming forward with this information," Langevin said in a statement. "The actions of Capt. Grismore do not reflect the values and high standards of conduct and performance that I expect from my staff each and every day.”
Grismore was running unopposed for the GOP nomination for Franklin County Sheriff in the primary election. Langevin said he will no longer support Grismore in his run for office.
NBC5 reached out to the Secretary of State's Office to learn if there had been any updates regarding Grismore's candidacy. The department said that its role is limited to ensuring that candidates meet the statutory requirements to be placed on the ballot. The office does not have the power to remove a candidate's name from the ballot without a court order.
Grismore's actions had previously caused both the Democrat and Republican candidates for Franklin County State's Attorney to call for his resignation.
The incident is currently under investigation by Vermont State Police.
