Dash cam shows Missouri trooper chasing woman accused of drunken driving, going wrong way

Cole County, MO - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is praising one of its own for “preventing a potential tragedy before it could unfold.”
Shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 7, Corporal Winters with MSHP Troop F in Cole County was driving west on U.S. 54.
In a probable cause statement, Winters wrote that as he approached Missouri Route C, he saw headlights coming toward him, and was soon passed by a white GMC driving east in the westbound lanes.
Winters said he turned his patrol car around into the eastbound lanes and caught up to the GMC, driving parallel with it while trying to get the driver’s attention and warn oncoming motorists. He described the driver as a woman who appeared to be in her 30s.
“During the entire time I was right next to her paralleling her vehicle, she ever once looked over at me, or acknowledged my emergency equipment,” Winters wrote in court documents.
When the GMC continued to drive the wrong way with no signs of stopping, Winters decided to turn around and intercept it. He used a “forcible stopping technique” to hit the GMC and disable it on the Missouri River Bridge.
He contacted the driver, 34-year-old Arielle Ripplinger of Columbia, Missouri, and noted the smell of alcohol in her car. She reportedly told Winters she had three shots of tequila and was just following her GPS, but didn’t see him trying to pull her over.
According to Winters, Ripplinger gave a preliminary breath sample that indicated her blood alcohol content was 0.153 percent. She was arrested and booked with the Cole County Sheriff’s Office. She faces the following charges:
* Driving while intoxicated- prior offender
* Driving the wrong direction on a highway divided into two or more roadways, causing an immediate threat of an accident
* Reckless driving involving an accident
* Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle
Paramedics were called to the bridge as a precaution, but no injuries were reported.
