Birmingham police release videos of fatal officer-involved shooting of Jamal Williams

Birmingham, AL - Birmingham police have released surveillance and body-camera footage showing the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Jamal Dangelo Williams in the Kingston community.
The incident occurred late Friday night when officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert and a 911 call reporting a fight. Community members directed officers to Williams, who they said was armed.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett stated, "When our officers arrived, they were met with an immediate threat not only to themselves but to every single community member that was out there." Four officers arrived at the scene around 11:38 p.m. and were informed that Williams had a weapon.
"As officers engaged, the shooting officer attempts to issue a verbal command to the individual to show his hands," Pickett explained. "At that exact moment, the individual produced a handgun from what appeared to be the front pocket of his hoodie and a response to that immediate threat, the officer discharged one round from his service weapon striking the individual and this happened before the officer could complete the word hands of his verbal command."
illiams was transported to UAB Hospital, where he later died. The officer involved has been reassigned from patrol duties, but their name has not been released.
