Jacksonville officers save man who was in a crisis on the Waterway Bridge
By: Jacksonville, FL - A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer is being praised for his lifesaving actions after helping a man in crisis on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway bridge earlier this month.
Officer Wright, a member of the agency’s Behavioral Crisis Response Unit, was first to arrive at the scene where a man was clinging to a light pole, contemplating suicide. Using his specialized training, Wright was able to connect with the man and de-escalate the situation, eventually convincing him to step back over the guardrail to safety.
“This is not the answer. The world is a better place with you in it,” the department wrote on social media, sharing the story as a reminder of the power of compassion and crisis intervention.
The man was safely removed from danger and connected with mental health resources to receive ongoing support.
The department also thanked the Neptune Beach Police Department for helping redirect traffic, giving Officer Wright space to speak with the individual uninterrupted.
