Nacogdoches, TX - Two deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office are being recognized for helping save the life of an 18-month-old child.

According to a post on the Nacogdoches Sheriff’s Office social media, on December 14, deputies were dispatched to a home on FM 226 in the Woden community. Dispatch said that the caller was frantic and needed help, and then figured out that there was a child who was unconscious and turning blue.

Deputies arrived on the scene seven minutes later and met with the mother and the child. Deputies saw that the child was struggling to breathe and immediately took decisive action to take the child to the hospital to save precious time. Deputies knew that the ambulance service had been dispatched but was coming from another part of town, and was a long distance away from the scene.

The child was loaded into the patrol unit without hesitation, and both deputies started toward town. One deputy gave medical attention to the child while the other deputy drove and gave real time medical information to dispatch.

Deputies continued to provide medical attention to the child until they arrived at a local hospital. Deputies were able to get the child to breathe better while in the vehicle. The child was quickly turned over to local emergency medical staff at the ER. The child would later be taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

The emergency staff doctor commended the valiant work of the deputies, advising them they likely saved the child’s life. The child has since been released from Texas Children’s Hospital and is back home.
