Southmayd, TX - A Southmayd police officer helped save a young child’s life early Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 1:00 a.m., an officer got a call to a home where a 23-month-old girl was reportedly choking.

When officer Scott Barrett arrived, the toddler’s mother ran up carrying the child, who Barrett saw was not breathing, unconscious, and had blood coming from her mouth and nose.

Barrett grabbed the child and began to hit her back to dislodge anything in her airway. His efforts worked, and the girl began crying and breathing again.

An ambulance took the toddler to Texoma Medical Center, and she was able to go back home a few hours later.
