Austin, TX - Austin police released dashcam video of a shootout involving an 18-year-old suspect following a pursuit over the weekend.

Devin Guevara opened fire on officers late Saturday, May 31, at the intersection of Research Boulevard and North Lamar Boulevard. Four officers returned fire and struck him in the clavicle, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a news conference Wednesday.

The incident began at approximately 11:16 p.m. when Austin Police Department officers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle. The suspect vehicle fled at high speed, running red lights and initiating a brief pursuit, Davis said.

About five minutes later, the suspect vehicle collided with a cement pillar along Research Boulevard but continued fleeing on what appeared to be a flat tire. The vehicle then struck an uninvolved car at the intersection with North Lamar Boulevard, causing the suspect vehicle to spin around.

As officers exited their vehicles, Guevara allegedly opened fire on them. Four officers returned fire, striking Guevara once.

"We are extremely fortunate that we're not standing here talking about an officer that's been shot or killed," Davis said. "There is no doubt — and you'll see that in the video — these officers did an extremely brave job."

The shooting was captured on police dash cameras. Davis said the footage shows Guevara "fired every single piece of ammunition that he had. There was no ammo left."

After being shot, Guevara listened to officers' commands and exited the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and booked into Travis County Jail on Sunday.

Guevara faces three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, evading in a motor vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The person in the uninvolved vehicle that was struck suffered minor injuries and was treated and released. One officer also received minor injuries but was treated and released. No officers were struck by gunfire.
