Westminster, CO - Authorities in Colorado say a man arrested for driving under the influence admitted to driving with his three children in the trunk of the car.
The Westminster Police Department shared body-worn camera video of the Jan. 23 traffic stop. Police said an officer spotted the vehicle driving recklessly and initiated a stop.
Upon contacting the driver, who was not immediately identified, officers said they smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle.
The driver denied having any alcohol and initially agreed to perform a field sobriety test. However, officers said he then declined the test and was placed under arrest.
After placing the driver in handcuffs, Westminster officers said the man told them that his kids were in the trunk of the car.
“You have three kids hiding in the trunk?” the officer can be heard asking in the video. Officers then opened the trunk and found the kids lying inside.
According to police, several bottles of alcohol were also found in the car.
The driver was taken to the Adams County Jail on charges that included driving under the influence, reckless driving and child abuse.
Child protective services was contacted, and the children were released to another family member.
