Man charged after Houston police sergeant shot in leg during gunfight

Houston, TX - A man accused of shooting a Houston police sergeant during a gunfight, in which the man was also shot, remained hospitalized Monday as officials announced he had been formally charged in connection with the shooting.

Bobby Jose Alvarado, 36, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer in the 487th State District Court, according to a Monday news release from the Houston Police Department.

Police at 11:35 p.m. Thursday arrived at Mykawa Road near Almeda Genoa Road in Houston, where a man with a gun began shooting at two sergeants, HPD Assistant Chief Adrian Rodriguez said, one of the shots struck a sergeant in the leg, Rodriguez said.

Alvarado was shot in the incident as well and remained hospitalized Monday morning, according to the release. A booking photo or court documents are not yet available in the case.

The sergeant injured in Thursday night's shootout was identified on Friday morning as Paul George in a statement by Houston mayor John Whitmire.

George is a 27-year member of HPD, assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division. After being shot in the leg, George was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

An 11-year HPD officer and fellow sergeant K. Burch also discharged his service weapon in the incident. He was not injured.
