Little Rock, AR - Arkansas State Police officials said a trooper has been terminated after mistakenly performing a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI) on the wrong car during a pursuit this past weekend.

ASP officials said the trooper, who they noted was hired in October 2024 and was still on probation, was pursuing a suspect on Interstate 630 on Sunday morning.

Officials said that around 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, the trooper saw a white Buick Envista going 92 miles per hour eastbound in a 60-mph zone on I-630.

The trooper then stopped the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Johnny Williams, and officials said the trooper detected a strong smell he believed to be marijuana. The trooper then confirmed that Williams was driving on a suspended license.

When the trooper ordered Williams to step out of the car, authorities said he refused and fled. The trooper went to pursue the suspect before briefly losing sight of the car.

As he pursued the car down I-630, the trooper spotted a white SUV that officials said was not going over the speed limit exiting I-630 on Exit 5.

ASP officials said the trooper believed the car was the suspect vehicle and performed a TVI to prevent the pursuit from spreading into city streets.

After the SUV stopped, the trooper exited the patrol car and ordered the driver to get out of the car at gunpoint before realizing he had stopped the wrong car, state police said.

State police said Williams later turned himself in to ASP Troop A headquarters on Jan. 20. He is facing charges of felony fleeing, failing to obey a police officer, driving on a suspended license and speeding more than 15 mph over the posted limit.
