Armed suspect injured when being arrested by LAPD officers

Los Angeles, CA - On January 12, 2026, officers from the Newton Gang Enforcement Detail were involved in a confrontation with 39-year-old Steve Lynch at the intersection of Broadway and 71st Street.
Attempting a pedestrian stop, something went awry, resulting in what has been described as a Non-Categorical Use of Force by the officers. The officers used firm grips, a take-down, and their body weight in an effort to detain Lynch. After being taken into custody, a loaded firearm was found on his person. Complaining of pain, Lynch was transported to a local hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department and was later admitted for injuries related to the incident.
The question of excessive force has surfaced, given the aftermath of the confrontation. Lynch, now identified as a convicted felon, has since been charged with possession of a firearm, a charge as specified under 29800 (A)1 PC. His booking number has been recorded as 7161083. In the course of this event, one of the involved officers sought medical treatment for injuries sustained but was subsequently released.
