Murfreesboro Police crack down on red-light runners as dash cam video captures close calls
Murfreesboro, TN - Murfreesboro Police are stepping up traffic enforcement after dash camera video revealed how dangerous red-light running has become on city roads.
During a traffic enforcement special conducted by the Murfreesboro Police Department’s Traffic Unit along South Church Street on Jan. 13, officers recorded 29 drivers running red lights in a single day.
Dash camera footage from the operation shows several close calls, including one incident where a cement mixer truck barreled through a red light, forcing a red SUV to slam on its brakes as other drivers swerved to avoid a crash.
Police say situations like this highlight how quickly a routine drive can turn into a serious or fatal collision.
Red-light running was just part of what officers observed during the enforcement effort.
Police issued dozens of additional citations for speeding, driving without a license, failing to wear seatbelts and failing to yield. Officers say some drivers were so bold they ran red lights even while driving next to marked and unmarked patrol vehicles.
