Villagers played in floodwater after heavy rain caused a dam to overflow in Thailand.

Despite warnings from authorities, locals have turned the Wang Rom Klao Dam in Uthai Thani province into an unlikely tourist destination.

Vendors selling food and beverages had already planted themselves near the dam causing slow traffic among passing motorists in the area.

Meanwhile, villagers braved the rain and parked their vehicles on swamped roadsides to take a dip in the reservoir, which had turned into a gushing mini waterfall.

A local official said: ‘We asked for the help of the local police to patrol in the area in case the weather worsened. We could not stop the people from coming despite being warned.’

Local police said they have stationed officers around the area for safety while reminding visitors to follow Covid-19 protocols and keep an eye on their kids.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
